Kamelot Auctions kicked
off the New Year with their Mid-Century and Design sale which was held on
Saturday, January 30th in Philadelphia, attracting interior designers and
private collectors alike. The sale offered an array of fine furniture,
lighting, and sculpture from the Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernist and
Contemporary movements.
The top lot of the day
a very good labeled Jules LeLeu model N4991 rosewood dining table having shaped
top with chamfered edge circa 1958 (lot 588). Far surpassing its pre-sale
estimate of $4,000 - $6,000, the table sold for $19,000 to a buyer in
Massachusetts. Other lots leading the sale include a mid-century modern
upholstered sofa in the manner of Federico Munari circa 1960 which also
surpassed it’s $1,500-$2,500 estimate selling for $6,750 (lot 156), and
likewise, an Italian multi drawer commode by Paolo Buffa for Arrighi circa 1960 estimated at $1,000-$1,500 which
sold for $5,500 (lot 39). The sale had several other pieces by Italian designer
Paolo Buffa including lot 49, a rosewood sideboard by Paolo Buffa circa 1950
which brought $5,250 along with lot 48, a rosewood console table by Paolo Buffa
circa 1945 that brought $2
Decorative arts also
performed well in the sale and leading them was a very fine two color abstract
form of Persian glass signed by Dale Chihuly and numbered PP96 circa 1990 which
brought $2,400 (178). Also deserving attention is lot 185, a signed and
numbered Mario Gonzales figural bust sculpture of a woman with copper clad hair
and applied butterfly selling for $1,000, and lot 189, a set of four framed
woodcut prints from the "Machinalia" series by Russian/American
artist Boris Artzybasheff selling for $1,100.
The auction saw the
successful sale of lighting pieces from a number of well-known artists, styles,
and periods. A rare pair of Maison Charles bronze corn form table lamps circa
1960 caught the eye of many collectors and came in at a final selling price of
$3,400 (lot 260), along with a Fontana Arte glass and brass floor lamp that
brought $2,600 (lot 69) and a rare bronze and iron floor lamp attributed to
Jacques Adnet circa 1950 that brought $2,600 (lot 255).
A nice collection of Murano glass was also offered in the sale, including two Italian
Murano glass chandeliers with glass leaves growing from a central glass bowl
circa 1950. Each estimated at a meager $500-$700, the pair of chandeliers
brought a combined selling price of $4,400 (lots 136 and 137). Similarly was a
very large pair of Italian Murano glass sconces which brought $3,000 against a
pre-sale estimate of $1,000-$1,500 (lot 119), and a Murano glass floor
lamp which brought $2,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $600-$1,000.
