April 12, 2014

Monday April 21st, 2014, PHILADELPHIA— Kamelot Auction House celebrated their ninth annual Garden & Architectural Sale in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 12th. Much anticipated by landscape designers and private collectors nationwide, the sale offered a huge selection of fine furnishings and fixtures almost exclusively for the outdoors. This year’s auction included nearly eight hundred lots of statuary, urns, fountains, lighting, stained glass, architectural, iron, and a good collection of Industrial furnishings and large-scale antique bars, counters and vitrines..

Bringing in the highest total selling price of the day was lot 361, a large grouping of iconic carved limestone balustrades and urns recently removed from a Main Line, PA estate circa 1910. Bidders of all types vied for the lot with a bidder in Australia eventually winning amongst a round of applause. Going for more than double the high estimate of $8,000-$12,000 the balustrade hammered for an amazing $29,530. Another top seller was lot 384, a carved oak paneled room with fireplace mantle circa 1900. Yet again, the bidding was heated from all directions, pushing an internet bidder to a final selling price of $23,400; over four times the high estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

A lot of seven hundred and three decorated floor tiles featuring leaves and lattice work circa 1900 also made an appearance at auction. The set far exceeded projections and sold for more than twelve times the high estimate with a final hammer of $9,800 (lot 403). Similarly was a rare set of five late nineteenth century English carved and painted figural busts each representing a branch of the military or an adventurer. The set was estimated at a conservative $1,500-$2,500 and grossed a final $12,000 (lot 404).

As the sale went on, many lots continued to far exceed expectations. A set of unusual oak haberdashery cabinets from Lane Rocks Men’s Store in Princeton, NJ circa 1915 grossed over $13,000 (lot 379, $2,000-$4,000). Other crowd pleasers in the garden category include lot 61, a truly monumental American Victorian nineteenth century Fiske cast iron garden urn with egg and dart decorated rim which brought $9,900 ($2,000-$4,000) and lot 85, a good French cast iron two tier fountain having a base comprised of four swans circa 1870 which brought $8,400 ($3,000-$5,000). Lot 74 featured a monumental nineteenth Century carved marble garden throne chair having arms terminating in birds heads with a fully carved back. Presented with estimates of $5,000-$8,000, the unique piece sold for over $14,000 to a buyer from the United Kingdom. Equally impressive was lot 22, a monumental life sized verdigris bronze fawn signed A. DeLuca having upraised arm and walking gate all raised on plinth base that grossed over $8,000.

Kamelot’s next sale will be the annual two day Town and Country auction which will be held on Friday June 13th and Saturday June 14th and will feature a diverse collection of furniture, fine art, and decorative arts items. For more information call 215-438-6990 or visit www.kamelotauctions.com.
