Every April, Kamelot Auction House hosts its specialty Garden & Architectural Antiques auction, an event that is now firmly established as a leading source for top-quality antiques and furnishings for the outdoors, as well as cutting-edge industrial objects and impressive architectural pieces. Now in its tenth year running, this year’s sale will be held at Kamelot’s Philadelphia gallery on Saturday April 18th and will showcase more than 600 lots in its entirety, including antique statuary, urns, fountains, planters, garden furniture, lighting, stained glass, wrought iron, architectural elements, carved wood, modern sculpture, and much more. Kamelot has amassed a spectacular array of offerings with many exemplary objects of magnificent scale and decorative stature. The collections are beautifully displayed the week prior to the auction and well worth the visit for those who opt to preview in person.

The buyer who seeks outdoor seating arrangements will find attractive furniture for every garden setting. An elegant terrace, for example, would be well graced by one are all of the three pairs of nineteenth century lily-of-the-valley cast-iron garden chairs being offered as lot 1 ($800-$1,200), 2($800-$1,200), and 3 ($800-$1,200)at the opening of the sale. In the same vein is a lot of eight Mathieu Mategot style wrought iron arm chairs circa 1950 estimated at $1,000-$1,500 (lot 296). For a more casual feel there is a stylish, simple pair of early twentieth century vintage labeled 'Heywood Wakefield' folding deck lounge chairs having slat backs and seats estimated at $400-$600 (lot 197).

Discerning buyers of garden statuary will discover abundant opportunities to acquire rare and unusual objects of lasting beauty, from the very Classical to the whimsical and weird, and everything in between. Lot 363 is a fine and monumental cast iron garden sculpture of an elegant woman with flowing hair and out stretched arm supporting a spread wing bird and comes with a pre sale estimate of $8,000-$12,000. Another beautiful example is seen in lot 358, a fine and rare French signed 'M. Esders' Art Deco life sized carved limestone figure of a female with draped cloth and elegant form circa 1920 estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

Perpetually popular in statue form are pairs of lions and dogs, and this sale has many choose from. Leading the selection is lot 362, a very good pair of nineteenth century Robert Wood, Philadelphia cast iron life sized standing lions estimate at $6,000-$9,000. Likewise, lot 368 is a pair of recumbent bronze lions of the Canova design, each raised on platform base, estimated at $800-$1,200. Lot 651 is a familiar and classic looking pair of American cast iron recumbent whippets attributed to Fiske circa 1900, estimated at $3,000-$5,000. Also very impressive on the animal front is lot 367, a pair of bronze horses, one standing at attention and the other in a grazing position by American artist Jim Davidson. The pair is estimated at $6,000-$9,000.

Other significant pieces include a fine pair of Italian nineteenth century carved marble Neoclassical garden urns (lot 335, $3,000-$5,000), a pair of Versailles style bronze garden urns having figural handles over foliate and animal form frieze above bowl with Greek key design (lot 10, $1,500-$2,500), and a monumental pair of nineteenth century American Victorian Adams garden urns having decorated bulbous form bowl with openwork handles (lot 330, $2,000-$3,000).

Exceptional planters and urns will also be offered in the sale. Most notably is a very fine and rare pair of French nineteenth century cast iron and enamel decorated conservatory planters (Lot 332, $8,000-$12,000). Six different lots in the sale feature Willy Guhl garden planters, including lot 96, a lot of twenty Willy Guhl style cast stone interlocking and stacking mid century garden planters circa 1950 ($1,500-$2,500), and lot 78, a very good pair of French Willy Guhl cast stone scalloped garden planters circa 1950 ($1,200-$1,800).

A select group of modern sculpture brings further enthusiasm to the sale. Leading the selection is a bronze sculpture by Prince Monyo Simon Mihailescu-Nasturel (American/Romanian, B.1926) titled "Eternal Flame” and estimated at $3,000-$5,000 (lot 76). Other highlights include lot 102, a large twentieth century abstract metal sculpture of geometric form by American sculptor Joel Perlman ($1,000-$1,500), lot 200, an interesting large scale architectural cast stone Roman inspired classical foot with sandal ($600-$800), and lastly, lot 99, an intriguing carved/cast stone hand form garden sculpture reminiscent of Pedro Friedeberg designs having articulated fingers and thumb ($300-$600).
