No one will be left empty-handed at Kamelot’s June 17th and 18th Town and Country Estate Auction,, no matter what they collect. The huge variety of popular categories runs the gamut from fine and decorative art, jewelry, antique furniture, lighting, garden antiques, textiles, and much, much more. Over 1,000 lots will be offered during the two day sale, which begins at 11AM on both days. Many of the items in the sale were consigned from the living estate of American writer, pianist, and educator Harrison Gradwell Slater. Slater has written both fiction and non-fiction, meticulously researched, on the lives of Mozart and Chopin, with “Night Music” and “Nocturne” being the most notable of his works. In addition to his music and writing, Slater is artistic director and chairman of the Peabody Mason International Piano Competition. Slater’s career took him all across the globe and in his travels he acquired a collection of treasures among which fine artworks, decorative objects and accessories, jewelry, clocks, and fine furnishings, are included.

6/17 TOWN & COUNTRY ESTATE SALE, DAY ONE: DECORATIVE ARTS & CONTINENTAL FURNITURE

Jewelry

A beautiful collection of jewelry will be sold in the two day sale, with more than 40 fine lots available. In addition to gemstones, jades, pearls and corals, perhaps the most leading among the highlights is the selection of gold, lead by a stunning 18 karat yellow gold and diamond pendant with a rare 1925 St. Gaudains 21.6 karat (90%) gold coin framed in bezel with approximately 3 to 3.5 carats of diamonds, all hanging on an 18 karat yellow gold chain. This showpiece comes with a conservative pre-sale estimate of $8,000-$12,000 and will be sold with no reserve (lot 58). A beautiful 14 karat yellow gold, diamond, and ruby retro wide buckle bracelet circa 1950 is estimated at $1,000-$1,500 (lot 61). With its 90 points of diamonds, this piece would make a wonderful gift for a lucky lady indeed, as would lot 62, a heavy 18 karat gold ladies link bracelet estimated at $1,500-$2,500. Just some of the many other notable choices include two 18 karat yellow and white gold rope chains estimated at $2,000-$2,500 (lot 59) and $1,000-$1,500 (lot 60) and a grouping of five 14 karat gold vintage bangles estimated at $1,000-$1,500 (lot 78).

Decorative Arts

Leading the sale’s decorative arts category is a monumental sterling silver vase signed “The Gorhm Co. Sterling 875” circa 1900 having exuberant Art Nouveau iris flower decoration. The vase comes in at a whopping 142.92 troy ounces of sterling silver and is presented with a pre-sale estimate of $2,000-$4,000. The selection of silver in this sale does not disappoint, with quite a variety of quality pieces available including seven sterling silver dinner service lots, most notable among them being a 169 piece sterling silver dinner service by Gorham circa 1920 weighing 150.95 troy ounces and estimated at $1,200-$1,500 (lot 215).

Lot 147 and 150 together represent a fabulous collection of antique and twentieth century Native American pottery signed by Vernida, Belen, Tapia, Acona, Simplicio, and others. This collection along with a few other choice pieces in this sale are sure to draw seasoned collectors of Native American artifacts.

This sale will also feature a rather fascinating collection of vintage and antique apothecary items which came from a Philadelphia area pharmacy that was in operation during the earlier part of the twentieth century. Some of the great finds include a lot of seven vintage Art Deco apothecary jars measuring from 9" to 24" (lot 237) and a great collection of vintage ceramic and glass apothecary mortars and pestles (lot 236).

Textiles

Day one will also feature a nice selection of Continental furniture as well as over thirty rugs and runners. Rug highlights include lot 275, a semi antique Heriz Oriental room size rug estimated at $600-$1,000, lot 272, a 10' x 13'10" Oushak rug estimated at $1,100-$1,300, and lot 266, a palace sized Chinese Art Deco rug having geometric pattern framing central design estimated at $600-$1,000.

Continental Furniture

Always a staple at Kamelot’s sales, fine Continental furniture will be plentiful in this sale, with a number chairs, settees, tables, desks, beds, cabinets, and much more to choose from. Lot 373 is a nineteenth century Continental carved king size canopy bed with twisted columns and upholstered headboard. Estimated at $2,500-$4,500, this bed will bring a sense of grandeur and luxury to any room that contains it. In the same vein is a monumental late nineteenth century French painted and gilt mirror having two cherubs embracing above a shaped frame and towering at almost six feet tall estimated at $1,000-$1,500 (lot 362). Another unique piece sure to catch the eyes of any design enthusiast is a large six panel Asian screen with multicolor decoration circa 1920. The screen measures approximately 9 feet in width and comes with an estimate of $600-$900 (lot 417). Additional choice highlights include a fine and rare nineteenth century Baltic flame birch empire center table having book matched top over shaped apron with gilt bronze mounts (lot 414, $2,000-$3,000), a good set of Louis XV style painted French dining chairs with shaped back and seat circa 1910 (lot 437. $1,000-$1,500), and a large Louis XV style walnut dining table with two leaves circa 1940 (lot 282, $1,000-$1,500).

The first day of the sale concludes with the presentation of lot 435: a fine and complete example of Zuber "Les Jardin Francais" scenic wallpaper originally created by Pierre Mongin in 1822 estimated at $10,0000-$15,0000. Hailing from the prestigious Lynchburg Museum in Lynchburg, Virginia, this lot in its entirety includes 54 total running feet of wallpaper and 25 wallpaper panels, along with the trim paper and Zuber drapery including hardware.

6/18 TOWN & COUNTRY ESTATE SALE, DAY TWO: FINE ART, GARDEN, AND FURNITURE

Fine Art

A select group of fine art, comprising just over seventy lots and featuring primarily American and European artists, will indeed bring further enthusiasm to this sale. Leading the selection is an oil painting by American artist William Morris Hunt titled "The Algerian Boy” signed in monogram W.M.H. and dated 1866, estimated at $10,000-$15,000 (lot 499). Also gaining attention is a bucolic landscape with hunting theme attributed to the British painter Peter Tillemans estimated at $4,000-$6,000 (lot 504), and an antique oil painting on wood panel attributed to Jan Wouwerman's "Going A Hunting" (lot 503) estimated at $1,000-$2,000. Lot 550 is a wood engraving by local Philadelphia area artist Wharton Harris Esherick. The engraving is pencil signed, titled and numbered 20/50 in margin circa 1927 and is presented with an estimate of $400-$800.

Antique Furniture

A selection of period Art Deco offerings is highlighted by an Art Deco Sycamore and maple cabinet having two mirrored doors circa 1930 estimated at $1,000-$1,800 (lot 807), as well as a pair of oversized Art Deco upholstered club chairs having a rounded back and macassar panels circa 1930 estimated at $1,200-$1,800 (lot 801). Among the other unique furniture pieces which will cross the auction block on Thursday is a modern Arts & Crafts style mahogany etegere estimated at $400-$600 (lot 912), a very good pair of Adams style demilune console tables, each having paint decorated tops over gilt gilt carved and fluted aprons estimated at $1,000-$1,500 (lot 938), and a Bakalowits and Sohne sputnik chandelier circa 1960 estimated at $2,000-$3,000 (lot 677).

Garden

A small but select group of garden items will be showcased, highlights include lot 995 and 996, both are a Neoclassical style carved marble garden bench having winged sphinx figural end supports with slab seat and estimated at $600-$800, along with lot 1032 and 1033, each a similar life sized cast iron Neoclassical garden sculpture of a woman with draped robes and holding a parchment scroll and writing implement and both estimated at $600-$900. Lot 1034 is a good bronze elephant garden fountain having upraised trunk and polished tusks and is estimated at $1,000-$1,500 and lot 971 is a turn of the century life sized bronze bust of a gentleman inscribed 'Schuler' having good detail and great verdigris patination, estimated at $800-$1,200.

Last of the two day event’s highlights is lot 964, a 1988 Jaguar XJ-S Convertible with V12 engine in Signal Red with Barley interior ($4,000-$6,000), and lot 965, a rare 1967 Jaguar 420 Sedan with original interior and opalescent blue exterior color ($6,000-$9,000).
