Post Sale Press Release

October 17, 2015

Kamelot Auctions' Mid-Century and Design sale was held on Saturday October 17th in Philadelphia, attracting interior designers and private collectors alike. The sale offered an array of fine furniture, lighting, and sculpture from the Art Deco, Modernist, and Contemporary movements.

The sale presented a variety of furniture, fine art, and decorative arts items to which bidders responded with great enthusiasm. The top lot of the day was a large 44” x 80” oil on canvas painting by American abstract modernist painter Ludwig Sander which sold for $11,250 (lot 185). Two other Ludwig Sander paintings in the sale sold for $5,000 (lot 184) and $2,000 (lot 183). Surpassing its pre-sale estimate of $1,200- $1,800, an interesting oak mid-century modern possibly Royer, desk having baseball bat form corner brought $10,625. Yet another stunner was lot 104, a rare set of twelve elegant French mahogany dining chairs by Gaston Poisson circa 1950 which fetched $5,000.

Jansen furniture – a staple at Kamelot - brought successful results across the board. A rare French brass bound two part library cabinet attributed to Maison Jansen circa received quite a bit of attention from designers and exceeded estimates selling for $5,000. Also noteworthy was a very good Maison Jansen Louis XVI style carved and painted upholstered settee circa 1940 which went for $4,000, and a pair of Jansen bronze and leather Directoire style two-tier tables circa 1950 that went for $2,500

Other highlights include a pair of labeled ''Pierre Vandel, Paris'' brass console tables circa 1970 which earned $4,000 (lot 331), a rare set of ten mid-century modern swivel dining room chairs circa 1970 that sold for $3,750 (lot 458), and a very good Italian mid-century modern upholstered settee in the manner of Marco Zanuso circa 1960 that brought $3,250 (lot 319).

Lighting contributed to the success of the sale with some strong results as well. A three piece lot of Jacque Adnet brass and glass lights including a four arm chandelier and a pair of single arm sconces circa 1950 hammered at $4,000 (lot 4), and a pair of French bronze and glass two-arm wall sconces by Jules Leleu circa 1950 brought $2,500 (lot 107).
